Abstract: An increasing number of central banks around the world are opting for research, pilot testing and the implementation of central bank digital currencies (CBDCS). China is one of the first countries to officially implement the digital yuan after a successful pilot test in April 2022, and its implementation has many consequences for domestic and foreign financial markets. In this paper, we discuss the concept and background of central bank digital currencies with special emphasis on the case of China, as well as the implications of establishing the digital yuan on the Chinese and global payment system.
