Abstract: The past fifteen years have been decisive in terms of the appearance and development of one of the most significant background systems serving as a foundation for the economy, the clearing services. In November 1994 the automatic clearing system was introduced in Hungary, and the past two decades saw a well-balanced operation, continuous development and more or less uniform increase in turnover. The paper presents the events of this period, the present of clearing services, and the changes in the near future which are expected to have significant impacts.
