Ricerca e alta tecnologia in Italia: le basi per un rilancio
Alessandro Sterlacchini ()
L'industria, 2004, issue 4, 675-706
Abstract:
This paper examines the Italian position in terms of industrial R&D and presence of hightech industries. Recent data show that the declining intensity of R&D expenditures is mainly attributable to the behaviour of the largest industrial groups, while Italian SMEs have recorded increasing R&D outlays. The decreasing presence of high-tech (ICT and science-based) industries is mainly due to the manufacturing industries of information technology and aeronautics, while other ICT industries, both in manufacturing and services, have increased employment and productivity. The above findings are the starting points for a reflection upon the urgent policy interventions that are needed in Italy in the fields of R&D and high technology, two crucial factors for enhancing the industrial competitiveness.
