Costs, Benefits and Prospects for Development of Renewable Energy Sources: The Italian Case

Umberto Monarca

L'industria, 2012, issue 3, 475-496

Abstract: In recent years, policy makers have increasingly focused their attention on renewable energy sources, stimulating economic and political debate on the future of the energy system scenarios. The most recent economic literature has deeply analysed the impact of the development of res technology and the growth of installed capacity on the future structure of energy markets. The aim of this paper is to deepen the Italian context: with reference to the literature on the benefits associated with the expansion of res in the energy-mix, we study the implementation of the National Renewable Energy Action Plan in order to verify the effects of the growth of res on the internal electricity market. We conclude by highlighting key findings and policy.
