Intergenerational propagation of inequalities in Italy: education, occupation, earnings

Abstract: In this paper the process of intergenerational transmission of inequalities in Italy is analyzed by means of information collected in the ISFOL PLUS 2006 survey and considering parental occupation as the variable proxy of family background. Mechanisms of intergenerational propagation are assessed observing the association among parents' and offspring's occupations and analyzing the link between parental characteristics and children outcomes in two following stages concerning: i) educational and occupational attainments; ii) the existence of a further earning gap for people coming from different backgrounds, outcomes in the first stage being equal. Besides, it is inquired whether this possible earning gap is associated to the interaction of parental and offspring occupations or it is related to the channels of job search.
