CoVid-19 Ephidemic: A case of tragic choices?
Matteo Rizzolli
Mercato Concorrenza Regole, 2019, issue 3, 485-490
Abstract:
The paper discusses how the CoVid-19 is revealing the implic ethical principles that guide regulators in managing the scarce resources of the national health system. The rapid saturation of beds in intensive care units has led to take «tragic choices» (Calabresi 1978) about who to treat and who to sacrifice. Also the decision to lockdown the country and its economy is another tragic choice and a very basic computation using statistical value of life measures (Viscousi & Masterman 2017) leads us to judge positively the decision in terms of cost-benefit analysis.
