The role of culture in sustainable development: past, present and future

Abstract:
The role that culture plays in the processes of sustainable development has been a topic of interest to researchers and policy makers for many years. This paper discusses past and present developments in the evolution of debate about these issues, considering the origins of the concept of sustainable development, and the ways in which culture has become implicated in sustainability policy. The relatively new concept of culturally sustainable development is defined and discussed Issues for the future indude problems of value and valuation, policy-making to serve the public interest, and the importance of a regional and local focus for development strategies.
