Giacomo Mazzone

Economia della Cultura, 2024, issue 4, 565-581

Abstract: Two interesting studies have been recently published by the European Audiovisual Observatory and by Eurobarometer, providing data on the trends registered in the fast years in media consumption and in the fruition of cultural goods. Six main trends have been identifìed across cinema, television, on line consumption, and access to news: Change 1 - digitalization has accelerated concentration processes of media ownership; Change 2 - concentration processes have mainly favoured US based group; Change 3 - digitalization stronger impact has been made possible by globalization processes such as those agreed at WTO; Change 4 - concentration of ownership of media has been accompanied by concentration of advertising resources, mainly towards the on-line market; Change 5 - progressive transition from linear consumption to on demand consumption; The last interesting trend - Change 6 - has been traced by the Youth Eurobarometer 2025 and underlines the commoditization of news and progressive transition of access to news from linear to on demand (mainly through social media).
