Fundraising for culture: the economics of giving
Marco Causi
Economia della Cultura, 2025, issue 1, 47-58
Abstract:
In the first part of this contribution the economics of giving is examined with a very synthetic review of literature. In the second part the focus is on cultural sector. It is argued that the driving forces of giving are from macroeconomic and cultural factors more than from fiscal incentives. It is argued moreover that the supply of giving is linked to a demand of active partnership with cultural institutions from the side of donors. Two European case studies are analyzed: the collection for the restoration of Notre-Dame, the role of giving in Italian public museums.
