The governance of culture in Poland

Dorota Ilczuk and Malgorzata Nowak

Economia della Cultura, 2010, issue 2, 247-260

Abstract: The text presents a short description of changes in cultural policy and trends in cultural management in Poland over the last 20 years and the most recent debates on Polish governance of culture as well as social initiatives aiming at legal changes in this field. The authors describe also the way the local authorities have taken the responsibility for conducting and organising the cultural activities on a non-national level, including trends and figures on financing of culture and some significant changes in the main tasks and operation procedures of public cultural institutions. The reader may notice that the way culture in Poland is governed has gone through some significant changes, still some recent debates show that the evolutionary process may be not enough. Maybe a revolution is needed.
