Abstract:
The function of public libraries throughout the world is to promoteeconomic, social, and civil development that is rooted in the present and oriented towards building the future. In Italy and the Mediterranean basin, public libraries also have the characteristic function of preserving the heritage of humanity. This aspect has represented a major burden, to the point of impeding the organisation of library services in Italy. This article considers economic and organisational aspects, provides Italian and foreign statistical data, reports on outstanding examples of new libraries and projects underway in Italy, and suggests a priority list of aspects that must be dealt with to resolve the difficult situation in Italy.
