Abstract:
This article reconstructs the main lines of evolution and points of continuity and discontinuity in the automation of Italian libraries over the last thirty years. Special attention is dedicated to the experience of the National Library Service, the most important Italian project for automation and organisation of library services. Its results are critically analysed.
