Beijing+25: Tacking Stock and Actualizing Section J through Transnational Collaboration

Claudia Padovani

Economia della Cultura, 2019, issue 4, 477-489

Abstract: The Beijing Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995 constitutes a milestone in international debates around media and gender. Today – as we celebrate twenty-five years since its adoption – it is crucial to assess the progresses made in promoting gender equality in and through the media; but also to acknowledge the missed opportunities in making communication responsive to unequal gendered relations across societies. It is time to reflect on what the Beijing Platform means to all researchers, professionals and advocates who work for making the media, traditional and digital, gender-responsive and inclusive; and to indicate the better path to actualize and implement Section J in the years to come. In this article we reflect on the contemporary value of the Beijing Platform by providing a global overview of media and gender inequalities. as we approach 2020, including evidence from the Italian case.
