Economia della Cultura, 2019, issue 4, 505-522

Abstract: In the 21 century, equality between men and women has been put in the political spotlight in Europe and internationally. SDG no 5. ‘Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’ penetrates the political agendas on different levels and, in recent years, gender equality issues are present in media and political discourse in Croatia. Particularly, issues concerning violence towards women and status of women in the society in general and their position in the labour market, have been put in the spotlight. This article will analyse the situation in Croatia concerning professional status of women working in the cultural sector. It will give overview of the available statistics and data assembled through previous research done on gender issues. In our analysis we shall focus on the share of women in cultural labour market and particularly on questions – how visible are they, how much recognition they receive for their work (awards, grants etc.), in which percentage do they hold decision making positions and other positions of power and who and where are the gatekeepers.
