The Role of the Italian Mezzogiorno Agro-industrial Sector in a Dynamic Social and Economical Environment

Abstract:
In the last decades, in the Italian Mezzogiorno the agroindustrial sector is becoming more and more prominent. The article analyses how the agroindustry benefits from the evolution of consumers' needs, the emergence of a new European model of agriculture and the growing influence of sustainable development concepts, so that it has new strong relevance. In Southern areas, agroindustry represents one of the strategic opportunities for enhance the development of the poorest regions of Italy. Even thought it contributes to increase employment and added value, there are still many obstacles: weak production structures, poor infrastructures and inadequate services. The article concludes figuring specific interventions in order to promote the growth of the agroindustry economy in the Mezzogiorno.
