A new cycle of concerted action? Social policies, incomes policy, interventions in favour of the Mezzogiorno

Rivista economica del Mezzogiorno, 2007, issue 3-4, 665-678

Abstract: It is necessary to reflect on new development models which are able to shrink the existing gap between the wealth of North Italy and degradation characterizing a lot of areas of South Italy. Could it be necessary a new cycle of concerted action, starting from premises different from those at the root of the process concerted in Italy early in the 90s? Could it be able to drive new actions of economic policy for the growth of the Mezzogiorno? This persisting dualistic condition, characterizing only Italy now, continues to keep the results of our economy away from those of others European countries. After a brief analysis of what happened in these last fifteen years in Italy, the applied regulations and the concerted actions set up, it seems clear that it is necessary to put into operation some actions and interventions in order to reduce economic gap between Northern and Southern Italy. Political and entrepreneurial engagement will be the only prompt action able to start the necessary territorial growth process necessary for the South of Italy.
