The incidence of the ILVA steel plant in Taranto province and regional economy

F. Pirro

Rivista economica del Mezzogiorno, 2011, issue 1-2, 235-264

Abstract: This paper aims at analysing the importance of the great steel plant ILVA in Taranto. This factory, the largest in Italy for the number of its direct employees, is also the largest steel plant in full cycle in Europe; it makes a significant contribution to the safeguard and promotion of employment and, in general, to the socio-economic development of this area. After rebuilding the history of this industry which was started in 1960 and completed in 1975, the paper analyses all the data that characterize the factory owned by the Group Riva in Milan, that is among the top 20 steel producers in the world.
