Understanding Italian Dualism: Institutional Complementarity or Short-term Hysteresis?

Abstract:
In this paper the latest quantitative research on the economic history of postunificationItaly are discussed. On the basis of this research, some recent contributionsto the literature on the dualism between North and South of Italy areevaluated. Finally, two theoretical models, based on neo-institutionalism categories,are proposed, which help to explain the origin and evolution of dualism.
