Determinants of Child Labor in the Export and Non-Export Sectors of Bangladesh

Abstract: Trade sanctions imposed by industrialized countries on products made by children in developing countries are motivated by the assumptions that children work in export industries and that such work harms them. We use binary logistic regression techniques to analyze the determinants of children's work in the export and non-export sectors of Bangladesh. Looking at all children, we find that the factors determining whether a child works in the export sector are being older, being a girl, living in an urban area, and having a less educated father.
