Abstract: There is a growing number of pseudo-scientific conferences that are based on an exploitative business model without regard for research quality. The predatory nature of such conferences means that an unsuspecting researcher is tricked into participating in these events. This study conducts an experiment to investigate how organisers of predatory conferences operate. The study concludes that the schemes set up by predatory conference organisers are sophisticated enough to convince a junior researcher to pay for participation in these events. This is the first study that looks at predatory conferences in the area of economics and finance. The review of responses to a flawed abstract shows that the acceptance offer was received within the first four days upon submission. Summing up, 3% (18 out of 613) of the targeted conferences firmly accepted the abstract. However, it does not mean that in other cases conference organisers acted honourably by ignoring the flawed abstract, even though 97% (594 out of 613) of the targeted conferences provided no response to the submissions.
