Balzac revisité. Portrait social des familles au XIXe siècle d’après les « souvenirs » de la comtesse Marie de Raymond

Abstract: The handwritten “Memories” of the countess of Raymond, Montesquieu’s descendant, reveals us the privacy and the social fate of the families which held the first place in the 19th century in Agen. Taking for base of study this typical portrait of Balzac’s world, the article sheds a light on the structures and the social function of families. We discover the provincial customs of a bourgeoisie controlled by the noble ideal, where the rank, determined by the family membership, leads the associates and the marital unions. In this century characterized by the renewal of elites, it also appears as a dominating factor of social rise.
