Abstract:
On September 9, 1964, the General Director of the Industry in the Belgian Ministry of Economic affairs has to deal with a French proposal to merge the Belgian and the French aeronautical industries. The project was opened to other participants in the future and was supposed to be a first step on the road to a European aeronautical industry, 30 years before EADS. It was eventually rejected by the Belgian government despite its general pro-Europe attitude. This article focuses on the issue of the difficulty to coordinate national actors taking part in such a decision and on the imperative necessity to obtain those home decision-makers cohesion as soon as the conception phase of a project. It also shows the fear in Belgium towards a possible French hegemony in the mid-Sixties.
