Abstract: The Transindochinois, the first and only network of railways in the former French Indochina, is inseparable from its initiator, Paul Doumer, governor of Indochina from 1897 to 1902. Launched on his arrival in Indochina, he prioritized the project, aiming to make the colony both strategic and profitable. The Transindochinois, which includes a section in Chinese territory, was considered a necessary public works project of high priority. It was Paul Doumer who gave the sustainable financial footing necessary and established the final lines of the network. This colonial experience undoubtedly marked his political career as an extraordinary statesman and he went on to become President of France in 1931.
