Abstract: The paper views the 18th century Austrian Netherlands as a military market. This market can be characterised as an “economy of desertion”. The contribution offers a reflection on the economic use made of the army as an institution by individuals, both soldiers and inhabitants, who traded with – and dealt in – deserters. The practises of desertion and recruitment are studied through the memoranda, composed by the French and Austrian authorities, at the renewal of the cartel treaty, passed in 1766, which was intended to regulate the reciprocal extradition of deserters in the Southern Netherlands. The paper focuses on the individuals’ motivations of desertion and the economic possibilities offered by the trade in deserters.
