Abstract: This article of historiography is programmatic too. It starts by stating the discredit from which political history has long suffered. The last few years have experienced a definite renewal with the assertion of a very dynamic cultural history of politics, a broad opening on other historical fields as well as the strengthening of closer links with other Human and Social Sciences which has contributed to new hybridizations. Two decades ago, René Rémond made an appeal on behalf of a total political history and it is high time this initiative became reality .
