Abstract:
The upheavals led by World War I played a fundamental role in the international rise of the swiss banking sector. Contextualizing a case study, the present paper discusses the policy of one the most important swiss banks of the 20th century (the Swiss bank corporation, today UBS) during this major phase of the Swiss financial center history. Internal archives and balance sheets of the bank are used here to discuss the history of this establishment before, during and after the war, and, with it, some of the major issues in the Swiss banking history of the beginning of last century.
