Abstract:
The Rugby World Cup (RWC) can be considered as a globalized mega-sporting event. The economic analysis of the impact of such great sporting events is always at the origin of controversial debates between the economists. Many methodological problems arise to make this calculation correctly and the results have to be interpreted very carefully. We did our utmost to systematically address all these problems in the best possible way, so as to arrive at the most reliable evaluation possible. Using the base theory and collecting reliable information on the field, we have endeavored to avoid the most common errors. The results show that RWC had a positive economic impact in all regions but with considerable variation. Finally, the spending of stadia and giant screens spectators are the main factor explaining the economic impact of the RWC.
