Abstract:
How to bring light on the processes and persons that have contributed to the growing number of universities and academic disciplines since the collapse of the Communist system in Bulgaria? Three new sociology departments established in state universities after 1989 illustrate this growth in higher education. Our analysis of the post-Communist state’s major reforms also examines how the persons involved have interpreted and undertaken these reforms for the purpose of creating new academic departments. The biographic itineraries of these “academic entrepreneurs” are described along with the results of their actions in relation to state-sponsored institutional reforms of higher education. Analysis at both the biographical and institutional scales provides evidence supporting the hypothesis that the growth of higher education, especially in sociology, has depended on the active role played by these entrepreneurs, who have mobilized personal, academic and polical resources in a context of legislative changes in order to construct a new academic order.
