Abstract: After the accession of Bulgaria to the European Union an increasingly acute problem is the preparedness of the small and medium-sized enterprises to cope with the competition in the single European market. Bulgarian companies work with low productivity, which determines their insufficient competitiveness on the international markets and the need of taking measures for its improvement. A proof of this is the labor productivity per worker, which is 8-10 times lower than that in European countries. The available employees at various levels play an essential role for the basis of this finding, as well as their qualification, management skills and company policies.
