Abstract: This contribution presents two Italian approaches of socio-political and socio-economic solutions, which in their combination promise a high potential for sustainable development of rural areas. With the national law for the regulation of Social Agriculture, which entered into force 2015, Italy has constructed an instrument, which creates simultaneously innovative socio-political and multifunctional agricultural solutions as well as integrative approaches to rural development and, as praxis shows, ecological transformation and legal economy especially in the Italian South (Fatti and Elsen 2020).
