Abstract: The big churches in Germany historically focused not only on purely religious services but through their local based parish system contributed to social and cultural activities in neighbourhoods, quarters and villages. Nowadays they are doing this more intentionally, trying to help developments of civil society flourishing. By this they are taking up new ideas of social space oriented social work. The article (1) focusses on the current situation, then (2) reports on churchly-theological discussion and (3) draws on practical examples and results of studies. At the end (4) it sums up by lining out the structural change of the churches from state-like institutions to civil-society actors after the end of traditional churchdom.
