Abstract: Museums frequently appoint the wrong candidates to top leadership positions, with long-term negative effects. In this paper, the authors therefore conduct a theory-based exploratory interview study in order to gain empirical insights into the status quo of leader recruitment in museums for the first time and to derive implications for the successful appointments of new museum leaders. The study reveals and discusses different approaches and strategies of public and private museums. Overall, potential for improvement is particularly evident with regard to the definition of relevant requirement criteria, the transparency of the selection process, and the use of valid selection instruments.
