Abstract: The current social mode of dealing with homelessness leads to people without housing being excluded and their social participation opportunities being limited. This is accompanied by processes of othering, through which stereotypes of the foreign other without housing are established to one's own, middle-class majority society. The article shows that homeless people adopt dichotomous constructions in their self-positionings. In addition, they develop practices of dealing with the prevailing foreign constructions about homeless others, which can be characterized as practices of concealment, demarcation, and adaptation.
