Abstract: The pattern language of commoning is a milestone in commons research. First, the ontological and epistemological foundations as well as the methodology will be introduced and their socio-political significance be emphasized. Second, the pattern language of commoning will be described theoretically and methodologically, and its relevance to the practice of commoning will be highlighted. It will be concluded that the pattern language is a systematic, empirically and theoretically sound approach that comes close to commoning, not least in its methodology. The paper acknowledges Helfrich's valuable work and aims at its continuation.
