Abstract: This paper analyses the historical development and the current role of cooperative system finance in Italy. The self-managed mutual funds were introduced thirty years ago by the reform law n. 59/1992 and represent today a distinctive feature of the Italian system in international comparison. They promote the entire cooperative movement by collecting profit shares from all cooperatives and reinvesting these financial resources in cooperative enterprises. They promote start-ups of innovative models and secure jobs by strengthening cooperative takeovers (workers’ buy-outs).
