Abstract: The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is accompanied by complex challenges. Especially in rural areas, innovative public services and modern infrastructure are vital. The role of public enterprises has received little attention in this respect so far. After illuminating the policy field "infrastructure" and the challenges of innovative service provision, the scope of innovative contributions by public enterprises is illustrated with case examples. Public purpose and political control make them a crucial instrument of innovative infrastructure and sustainability policy.
