Abstract: Sustainability, regionality and common good are in line with the zeitgeist. For the Braucommune Freistadt, however, they are not just “marketing buzzwords”; due to its unique legal construction, this brewery has lived these values since its foundation in the 18th century. In this respect, this case study analysis should serve as an inspiration for the development of real utopias towards (more) sustainable business practices that integrate the dimensions of economy, ecology and social issues. The article focuses both on the characteristics of the special legal form “commune” with its opportunities and risks, and on the strong orientation towards the common good of this special company.
