Abstract:
Innovation in tourism occurs mostly at interorganizational level. In addition, it has to be considered that visitors play an eminent role due to their personal involvement as co-producers of their own tourist experience. Finally, these experiences must be embedded in a specific environment with peculiarities of the location such as relationships among actors, organizational and institutional settings and natural and cultural resources. Such a particular framework calls for a specific, tourism related discussion and approach. Our conceptual article presents in its first main part based on the example of peculiarities of tourism the challenges that innovations in networks pose to actors and organizations. We then propose a theory based framework for action. The second main section paves the way for practice with the help of successfully applied instruments and methods and how they contribute to effective network innovation in tourism. The article concludes with implications and recommendations for other industries.
