Abstract: When appointing executives, elaborate selection procedures are usually used, in which performance criteria are to be applied. We point out some weaknesses in this process, in particular the risk of hubris among executives and the leaky pipeline for female executives. Using two laboratory experiments, we show that an almost forgotten procedure - focal random selection - may offer a remedy.
