WSI-Mitteilungen, 2012, vol. 65, issue 6, 457-463

Abstract: Over the past decade, transnational company agreements have emerged as a new and significant instrument in company-level industrial relations. While research has so far mainly focused on the case-study based reconstruction of negotiations and agreements, this analysis explores the quantitative dimension of bargaining at transnational company level. This article presents the results of a methodical empirical study which was based on a telephone survey among 82 European Works Councils in the metalworking industry. The study provides an overview of the spread of transnational bargaining at company level and draws conclusions about its prospective development based on an analysis of the company-specific framework conditions and orientations of the actors involved. Moreover, by also including informal arrangements between European Works Councils and management, this study for the first time sheds light on an issue which has not been considered in EWC research to date.
