Abstract:
The paper gives an overview of the demand for skilled labour and raises the question whether regional or occupational skills shortages are observable. Within this context, firms were asked about the extent of recruitment problems and the reasons affecting this. Therefore, special questions were included in the German Survey of Job Vacancies (EGS) which was carried out by the Institute for Labour Market and Employment Research (IAB) and have now been analyzed for the first time. The results show that it is mainly firms in west Germany that are facing skills shortages, but also east German employers have to deal with recruiting difficulties. The survey also demonstrates that employers have a number of options available to them when dealing with a shrinking labour market.
