Abstract:
Only a minority of school-leavers from lower secondary schools start their vocational training immediately after the completion of compulsory schooling. The majority goes through one or more intermediate steps between the end of the compulsory schooling and the beginning of regular vocational education and training. Based on the DJI-Transition Panel, which covers transition processes over the first five years after leaving school, typical transition careers are identified and factors of influence are examined. Results indicate that although only a minority of school leavers finds immediate access to vocational education and training, about 40% of those who go through intermediate steps also manage to proceed to regular training and about 10% even reach tertiary education. However, about one quarter of the young people remains without any formal training and has to face unemployment and precarious work. Successful integration of this population into the vocational training system is influenced by regional contexts, school performance and migration backgrounds.
