Mobile Arbeit: zwischen Autonomie und Fremdbestimmung

Manuela Maschke, Gerd Nies and Gerlinde Vogl

WSI-Mitteilungen, 2014, vol. 67, issue 2, 156-159

Abstract: Mobile work is a type of work without physical boundaries that can display a variety of very different forms: working at home, on a customer’s premises, while travelling, anywhere in the world. Work is also mobile when an individual not only has to make many business journeys but the content of his or her work is also mobile, for example in the case of virtual project teams. This essay looks at the scope for representing employees’ interests with regard to this issue. Working hours, constant availability, health protection and skills development are important aspects identified from an evaluation of 96 company agreements and 10 case studies. The essay argues in favour of identifying and addressing the needs of mobile employees and working with them to find collective solutions. Squaring the circle means making sure that employees have as much freedom as possible to shape their own working time, workplace and work organization but at the same time are protected from excessive dissolution of boundaries, flexibility and increased workloads.
