Abstract: The article reconstructs the labour market and collective bargaining reforms passed in Italy and Spain between 2010 and 2012, under direct pressure from EU institutions. It stresses the unprecedented role of external influences and the risks of unintended consequences stemming from the disruption of existing institutions, but also the resilience of national specificities and the openness of the process of change. Reforms have been more profound in Spain, without however producing better labour market outcomes than in Italy.
