Abstract: The current criticism of finance-market capitalism has triggered a debate on its legitimization resources. It is within this context that the images of society, as seen by wage earners, attract renewed scientific attention. Based on evidence from an industrial company, the article identifies a type of awareness in which high levels of identification with the firm are somewhat surprisingly associated with a pronounced critique of economic growth. It is argued that the critical stance towards the principal “always more and never enough!” forms a cognitive bridge between the concrete experiences at work and the subjective images of society. However, there seems to be little evidence that works councils and trade unions are taking up this ecologically inspired critique. As a consequence, the questioning of growth can only gain expression in an individual temporary withdrawal on the side of the worker.
