Intelligent wachsen. Die grüne Revolution

Ralf Fücks

WSI-Mitteilungen, 2014, vol. 67, issue 7, 560-561

Abstract: The call for “Prosperity without growth” is finding resonance in all political directions, from the left to the conservatives. As stimulating as this debate might be, it borders on escapism. Zero growth is not a realistic option. In order for everyone to have a lifestyle at the pinnacle of their possibilities, it is not only necessary to have a more equitable distribution of wealth, but also a prospering economy with a strong industrial base. The way out of the crisis is via an innovation offensive that will heave Europe to the peak of ecological modernization. The race against the climate crisis does not demand a shrinking economy, but rather the acceleration of structural change. That implies rising investment and a faster rate of innovation – effectively the opposite of a post-growth strategy.
