Intelligent wachsen? Hoffnungen wider die Tretmühle der Akkumulation

Klaus Dörre

WSI-Mitteilungen, 2014, vol. 67, issue 7, 562-563

Abstract: The current dominant forms of economy, production and consumption, are not sustainable. To give the south a chance to develop, the turn must begin in the capitalist centre. To this end neo-Schumpeter approaches put their faith in “intelligent” growth. Five arguments were developed against this position –the focus of which is the idea that out of the creative destruction that Schumpeter claims defines capitalism, the creative preservation of untenable social relations has grown. Capitalistic growth has mutated to a treadmill which can only be moved by the application of ever increasing amounts of energy. If the goal of sustainability is to be taken seriously, this treadmill must be put into question.
