Abstract:
The relationship between vocational training and university education is currently tilting towards the latter. The trend towards academization fostered by European education policy and the propagation of life-long learning – with a university study being the best prerequisite for this – appear to be successful. However, a competitive relationship between university education and vocational training would be dysfunctional. Vocational training is losing its attraction for high-performing young people, whereas under-performing young persons and persons with migration background are considered unattractive for vocational training. The shortage of skilled workers is not uniformly widespread but it is a key task of vocational training to make use of this shortage to counteract the persistence of unequal entry opportunities into vocational training.
