Abstract:
A long-term trend towards nonstandard work arrangements such as part-time employment, marginal jobs and fixed-term contracts can be observed. There is not a single explanation for this trend but rather several factors which might be responsible for change. We choose the perspective of employees in order to analyse individual determinants for different types of work arrangements and their change in importance over time. The results suggest that particular factors have driven each employment relationship. In the case of part-time employment subject to social security contributions the family component dominates. For marginal jobs low education as well as low qualification is decisive. Fixed-term contracts are more concentrated amongst young workers. It remains to be seen how far workers have selected themselves into the different types of employment or how far they were driven by market forces. In this context we cannot verify whether employees choose these work arrangements knowingly or involuntarily.
