Abstract:
The political handling of the financial and economic crisis presents the European nation-states with considerable challenges.. Measures to counter the effects of the crisis as well as the political process leading to those measures may have unintended consequences for the political order. This article examines the question of whether there is an interconnection between governmental austerity measures and the degree of satisfaction with the functioning of the democracy of a country. This satisfaction is important for the legitimacy of democracy. The results of a multilevel analysis show that austerity has a negative impact on the satisfaction of the people with the functioning of democracy.
